"We knew it would be a grave undertaking, but we had no idea it would be such a monumental task.
When most people decide to move to a rural setting, they envision a cabin in the woods, or a mini farm, or a horse ranch, or some other outdoorsy setting. We moved to an historic cemetery. Forty years of grave digging confirm me as the last one on Earth to let you down. In the spirit of Wire Paladin, I could have business cards imprinted, "Have Spade, Will Travel." There are fourteen active historic cemeteries in our county, and I can give you the soil profile of each one, down to about five feet. The person who dug graves at the outlying cemeteries retired, so that work fell to me.
So, here is a bit of history, both of Greenwood Cemetery and of my involvement with it. I like to tell folks that my wife and I are the liveliest ones in the cemetery...except at night."
